We have a bunch of kids that have a bunch of activities and quite frankly, those shoes come away smelling like hot summers with no wind. I said all that to say, as much as we love our kiddos those shoes STINK. How exactly they smell like “hot salad”, I’ll let our Co-founder Augie explain that, but let's dive into how and why to keep a schedule to clean those well used athletic shoes.
Why Clean Your Hot Foot Shoes?
Before we jump into the how-to, let’s talk about why it’s so crucial to keep your hot foot shoes clean. Over time, sweat, dirt, and bacteria can build up, leading to unpleasant odors and even potential skin issues (que that teenager athlete’s foot). By regularly cleaning your shoes, you’re not just maintaining hygiene—you’re also ensuring that your footwear stays comfortable and functional.
To get started, gather the following:
- Dinobi Detergent – Perfect for gentle yet effective cleaning. And don’t worry, any scent will do.
- A small, soft-bristled brush or an old toothbrush.
- A clean cloth or sponge.
- Warm water.
- A basin or sink.
- Optional: a shoe tree or rolled towels to help maintain shape while drying.
Step by Step Clean with Dinobi:
Step 1: Remove Laces and Insoles
I ALWAYS forget this part, then I wonder why there are strategically placed dirt rings on parts of the strings when I tie the laces later on. Begin by removing the laces and insoles from your shoes to clean every part of the shoe thoroughly. If the laces are dirty, you can soak them in a small bowl with a little Dinobi and warm water. Give it about 20-30 minutes.
Step 2: Knock Off Loose Dirt
Gently tap the shoes together outside to knock off any loose dirt or debris to make the cleaning a little easier.
Step 3: Prepare Your Cleaning Solution
In a basin or sink, mix a small amount of Dinobi Detergent with warm water. Dinobi is highly concentrated, so a little goes a long way—usually about a teaspoon per half-gallon of water. Fight the urge to use more as you’ll need it for the spot treatment of the insoles in Step 6.
Step 4: Scrub the Exterior
Dip your soft-bristled brush into the solution and gently scrub the exterior of your shoes. Focus on any stained or particularly dirty areas, but be gentle to avoid damaging the material.
Step 5: Tackle Those Hard-to-Reach Spots
Now for the tricky part! Use the toothbrush to get into the nooks and crannies, like around the eyelets, seams, and where the sole meets the upper part of the shoe. A circular motion works best here.
Step 6: Clean the Insoles
The insoles often absorb a lot of sweat and odor. Give them a good scrub with your brush and the same cleaning solution. Spot treat as needed. Rinse well and set aside to air dry. If you are like me, and you’d rather use the dryer, make sure to use a low setting as to not damage insoles or shrink them.
Step 7: Rinse Thoroughly
Once you’re satisfied with the scrubbing, rinse your shoes thoroughly with clean, warm water.
Step 8: Drying
Pat the shoes dry with a clean towel, removing as much moisture as possible. Stuff them with a shoe tree or rolled-up towels to help maintain their shape and leave them to air dry in a well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources, as they can warp or damage the materials. Now, here’s a trick to help them dry a little faster - leave them on top of the dryer while it’s running. You’ll be surprised at how much faster they dry!
Tips for Keeping Your Hot Foot Shoes Fresh
- Spot Clean Regularly: Don’t wait until they’re filthy. A quick wipe-down with a damp cloth and a little Dinobi can prevent buildup.
- Use a Shoe Deodorizer: Keep odors at bay with a natural shoe deodorizer or even a sprinkle of baking soda inside.
- Alternate Pairs: If you wear these shoes often, consider alternating pairs to give them time to air out between uses.
- Store Properly: Keep them in a cool, dry place. Use shoe bags or boxes to protect them from dust and dirt.
