We Like Residuals...but Not Like This!

Look, we get it.  Tide Pods have become a popular choice for laundry due to their convenience and touted effectiveness. However, some users have noticed that Tide Pods can leave sticky residue on clothes and even inside the washing machine, causing mold and smelly washers. If you've experienced this issue, you’re not alone.

Tide recently addressed a packaging flaw, but many customers continue to report residue-related problems that go beyond faulty packaging. This issue can affect your clothes’ cleanliness and the performance of your washer. Who wants to get all dressed up with somewhere to go, all to smell like washing machine leftovers? Let's dig in to find out why this happens and why we make our formula the way we do.

Why Do Tide Pods Leave Residue?

There are several factors that could cause Tide Pods to leave behind sticky residue:

  1. Overloading the Washer Most folks think "save time, not space" when washing clothes, are we right? When a washing machine is overloaded, there may not be enough space for the PODS® to dissolve properly. This leads to detergent buildup on clothes and potentially in the washer drum, resulting in sticky spots on your laundry.  Not to mention, you may have to rewash that sticky load again, thereby using more water and wasting that time you were trying to save.

  2. Cold Water Settings While Tide Pods are designed to work in cold water, extremely low temperatures may prevent them from dissolving fully. If the water temperature is too cold, the detergent might not release all of its cleaning power, leaving residue behind on both your clothes and the washer. Basically, it takes warmer water to fully dissolve microplastics and gel detergent. Just sayin'.

  3. Incorrect Usage Now, you may be wondering "how can you use a Pod incorrectly? You just throw it in, right?" If you place Tide Pods in the wrong part of the washer, such as the detergent drawer instead of directly in the drum, they may not dissolve effectively. The recommended method is to place the pod directly in the drum, on top of your clothes, to ensure they dissolve evenly. Thankfully, with a LIQUID detergent, you won't have to worry about that. Teehee.

  4. Soap or Surfactant Build-up Tide Pods use a concentrated mix of surfactants (the ingredients responsible for breaking down dirt). However, this concentrated formula can sometimes be too much for certain wash cycles, especially when using cold water or washing smaller loads. The excess detergent may not fully dissolve, leaving soap build-up on your clothes and washer. Enter smelly residue.

  5. Non-Dissolving Components Tide Pods contain various ingredients like enzymes and brighteners to enhance cleaning. While most components dissolve well, some stabilizers or thickeners may not dissolve as effectively, particularly in cold water. These undissolved ingredients can contribute to residue left behind on fabrics or in the washer.

  6. The Encapsulation of Detergent in the Pod The thin, water-soluble film surrounding the Tide Pod is meant to dissolve during the wash cycle. However, in some cases, the film doesn’t dissolve completely—especially in machines that don't have enough water flow or if the agitation is too weak. This can result in sticky residue on both your clothes and the washer.

  7. Excessive Use of Detergent Although Tide Pods come pre-measured, some users may opt to use more than one pod per load, especially for larger or dirtier loads. Using more detergent than necessary can cause excess detergent to accumulate in the washer, which may not rinse out completely, leading to residue build-up.
